2010 PDX Pop Now! - PDX Pop Now!

July 30 – 6pm, July 31 – 1pm, Aug 1 – 1pm – Rotture 315 SE 3rd Ave in Portland

Dedicated to celebrating, promoting, and enhancing Portland's vital and diverse music community, we also strive to connect this community in various ways to the public.  Begun in 2004 in true DIY fashion by a dozen or so members of the PDX-POP mailing list, the group has produced three music compilations and FREE, ALL AGES multi-day music festivals.  The PDX Pop Now! festivals — which have provided the public the opportunity to see up to 50 of Portland's finest bands in one safe venue -have drawn audiences in the thousands

 

PDX Bridge Festival - Hawthorne Lift 100

July 24 – Aug 7 - Hawthorne Bridge - Willamette River

“Hit the Lights” is the lighting and fabric installation on the Hawthorne Bridge, possibly the largest art installation in Portland history. The lights accentuate 60 panels of fabric installed in the bridge trusses and lift towers, turning the structure into a wash of color and moving light and marking the rhythm of commuter traffic as it moves across the bridge.

Sunday, August 1st at 4pm – Daniel Duford – The Green Man of Portland

Powell’s on Hawthorne, 3723 SE Hawthorne Boulevard

Daniel Duford, artist and writer, presents “The Green Man of Portland”–a comic series of a faux legend, represented by public art installations around the city, that assimilates the various histories of Portland, the Willamette River and its bridges.  Wednesday, August 4th at 6pm

Art Institute of Portland, 1122 NW Davis Street

The Renegade Minstrels deliver a panoramic musical and photographic narrative of Portland’s bridges. With original music and songs composed in Portland by Woody Guthrie, they share a variety of perspectives with the audience–from the Depression-era squatters’ shacks under the Ross Island Bridge to the soaring experience of crossing the Marquam Bridge in 2010.  Free/All Ages.  For more event activities visit www.pdxbridgefestival.org

The River City Band will be playing before the movie beginning at 6:30, the movie begins at dark.

 

Riverview Six to Sunset Concert - Zuzo Blue

August 5, 6 - 8 PM - Esther Short Park - 301 W. 8th Street

Come join the fun at Esther Short Park as the band Zuzo Blue plays the sun to sleep! Food vendors will be selling dinner and snack foods throughout the event. Everyone is welcome, so get ready to rock and we will see you in the park!

 

Mad Science: What do You Know About H2O?

Art in the Heart Festival

August 6 - 7, 5:30 PM - 6th to 11th, C St to Columbia in downtown Vancouver

The Worlds 13th Annual Elephant Garlic Festival!

The festival features entertainment of all kinds--from the kid's stage, jammin' blues, and blues grass, an arts and crafts mall, and a beer and wine garden.  North Plains is about a 35 minute drive from Vancouver.  Free Admission.

 

Let’s Make A Splash with Reading    

Saturday, August 7 - 11-11:45 a.m. - Albina Library - 3605 N.E. 15th Ave.

A musical performance designed for 5 year olds to 5th graders. Performer Cinda Tilgner loves to “sprinkle” a few Spanish words throughout her songs for everyone to sing. The audience becomes the rhythm band using very cool instruments in this interactive & educational music program. 

 

Freezer Paper Stenciling on Fabric    

Saturday, August 7, 1-3 p.m. - Gregory Heights Library - 7921 N.E. Sandy Blvd.

Use freezer paper, scissors, an iron, and fabric-friendly paint to stencil designs onto fabric (like t-shirts) that you bring with you. Recycled Plastic Bag Bag

Artist and author Diane Gilleland will show you how to use all those plastic grocery bags in your cupboard. Give them a new life as yarn - or, "plarn," to be more exact. We'll learn the process to convert bags into yarn, and then crochet a simple wristlet bag.  Register By Phone: 503.988.5234

Fire in the Park

August 14, 11am -9pm - Esther Short Park

Enjoy a full day of activities at the park, highlighted by a firefighter challenge competition, chili cook-off, children's activities, several NW fire pipe and drum corps, and music by 5 Guys Named Moe.  Free to the public.

 

Second Saturday at the Water Center - "Water Ranger"

August 14, 1 - 3 PM - Water Resources Education Center - 4600 SE Columbia

Become a Water Ranger at the August 14 Second Saturday! Engage in water-related activities and show how you could use a little less water at home. When you have completed the activities, help make your Water Ranger button.

Children and their families are invited to this free event.

 

2010 Portland Adult Soapbox Derby - 
Saturday, August 14th – 10am - Mt. Tabor Park – SE 60th and Salmon

Races start at the amphitheatre and there will be 39 teams.

 

Food Art!

We will cut and paste our own distinctive characters out of fun fruits, vegetables and other edibles. Good for parents and children! Taught by author and artist Addie Boswell. 

 

Create Your Own Comic Book

You’ll learn about the different parts of a comic book, how to write it, how to plan it out, and how to bring it all together! It is time to see your characters and stories come to life on the action filled pages of a comic book. Ideal for kids 6-12.

Border Collies International Performing Canine Team    

Thursday, August 19, 2-4 p.m. - St. Johns Library - 7510 N. Charleston Ave.

This four-dog, four-kid team entertains and educates audiences with sports demonstrations, such as frisbee, soccer, football, baseball and basketball. 

 

RiverFest

August 19-22 - Tom McCall Waterfront Park - 1020 SW Naito Parkway

Popular attractions from last year return, including Dragon Boat Races, the River Fair, and the SOLV Cleanup. We have also added many new and exciting events for the whole family to enjoy. Join us this summer to celebrate the river on the river.  www.portlandriverfest.org

 

Corn Husk Flowers/Flores de Hojas de Maíz    

Friday, August 20, 1-3 p.m. - Gregory Heights Library - 7921 N.E. Sandy Blvd.

Local artist Maria Alvarado will show you how to create beautiful corn husk flowers often used in Latin American festivals and street fairs. For ages 8 and up; all materials provided.

Are you looking for fun, food and great cars? "On the Grass" is a car show featuring classic cars. The event will be held at Marshall Community Center at McLoughlin and Ft. Vancouver Way.

 

Russian-American Cultural Festival "Soberiha"-2010

August 21, 12 - 6 PM - Esther Short Park

A celebration in the style of the traditional Russian folk carnival and American music.  Admission is free.  We invite musicians, singers and dancers, from WA, OR and Alaska States. There also will be opportunity for visitors to try their hands at some traditional Russian games.  This event will be a charitable event also. Through our advertisements about Festival we call people to donate some can food, warm blankets and bring it to event. There will be special boxes near the stage where people can put their stuff which will be donated to shelters after our event.

 

Make a Splash with Bend Magic’s Bill Mitchell

Loose Ukes!    

Wednesday, August 25, 6:30-7:30 p.m. - Albina Library - 3605 N.E. 15th Ave.

Learn to play the ukulele! This workshop assumes little or no experience with the instrument, and uses songs with only one and two chords. With a couple of strums, chords, and most importantly, one or two ukulele tricks, you’ll be the life of the party! It is impossible to not smile while playing the ukulele.  Loaner instruments are available for the workshop. 

 

Mz. Pearl: the Under Water Revue

A solo clown show filled with FUNNY physical comedy, circus skills and clever--or at least odd--solutions to bizarre problems. Pearl is a skilled performer and captivates her audiences, a family favorite!
