Thursday, July 2 - Horton Hatches an Egg 2-3 p.m - North Portland Library - 512 N. Killingsworth St. Emily Alexander of Tears of Joy Theatre brings to life an array of tabletop puppets with vivacious voice and movement. The play also includes a one-woman circus that will get everyone cheering. Monday, July 6 - Guys Read Open House 6-7 p.m. - Hollywood Library - 4040 N.E. Tillamook St. in Portland Get together with other guys who love to read and celebrate your favorite books with trivia games and other fun book-related activities. We'll have snacks and you'll have a chance to learn about the Guys Read Club at the Hollywood Library. Guys in grades 4-8 are welcome along with any adult family member. July 17-18 - Robin Hood Festival 2009 In homage to the fanciful Sherwood Forest, the annual Robin Hood Festival brings to life the legend of Robin Hood, his Merry Men and Maid Marian. The two-day festival is a long-standing tradition complete with a parade, food, dancing, music, and a crowning of a Maid Marian. Family stage includes sword fighting, juggling, and puppet shows! Friday, July 17 – Free Concert in the Park 6:30 PM - Fernhill Park - (NE 37th, north of Ainsworth) Norman Sylvester Band (Original R&B) Saturday, July 18 - 1860's Vintage Baseball 6 PM to 8 PM – 610 E Reserve St. On the Parade Ground near the Bandstand The first vintage baseball game of the season, this gloveless game with wooden bats is played by very differnt rules! Bring a picnic and watch staff and volunteers recreate a game, playing by the rules established in 1860. The 1st Oregon Voluteers will once again play the Vancouver town team. Come and cheer for your favorite team, but beware... the umpire can fine the audience for "ungentlemanly" or "unladylike" behavior. Free of charge. All materials provided. July 18 – 19 - Soldier's Bivouac at Vancouver Barracks 9 AM to 5 PM – Ft. Vancouver – 610 E Reserve St Much of the news today is about soldiers in battle. However much of their time is spent at camp and in the community. Explore the camps of soldiers from Vancouver Barracks' past and present. Visitors will see what life was like in the military from a soldier's point of view. Free of charge. Saturday, July 18 – Free Concert in the Park 6:30pm - Rose City Park - NE 62nd & Tillamook in NE Portland Quartette Barbette (Seriously Fun Saxes) Sunday, July 19 – Portland Sunday Parkways in Northeast 9am-4pm – NE Portland Sunday Parkways is about connecting neighborhoods and people: walkers, runners, bikers, seniors, adults, and children all enjoying a route filled with performers, activities and food – all in a car-free environment. Featured parks/activity areas: Alberta, Fernhill and Wilshire Parks Sunday, July 19 - Recycled Wool Coffee Cup and Mug Cozies 2-4 p.m. - St. Johns Library - 7510 N. Charleston Ave. in Portland Turn old sweater pieces into a sleeve for disposable paper coffee cups, and a cozy for mugs. Both cute and practical, the cozies will keep your hot drinks hot, and keep your hands from burning, while looking much better than throw-away cardboard sleeves. You'll use some basic hand-sewing and embroidery to put together and decorate the sleeves, and can even add appliqué decorations if you want. Call 503.988.5234 to register. Arts, Crafts, and food vendors will round out this festival which is now considered the third largest annual event at Esther Short Park.
